“Gold Star Court of Honor” Texas Historical Marker Dedication

November 10, 2016 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

This is an invitation to attend the Texas Historical Marker Dedication for the Gold Star Court of Honor, November 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM at Spohn Park, 600 Mesquite.
This memorial was dedicated in 1931 for the 39 Nueces County men killed in WWI. Each soldier has an individual bronze medallion with a crepe myrtle tree planted adjacent to it. The medallions line the Broadway Bluff Balustrade just under the Corpus Christi Cathedral. At the dedication approximately 2,500 people attended. In 1931 the Corpus Christi Cathedral was yet to be built. The Port of Corpus Christi had opened in 1926, the King and Kenedy homes were located where the Corpus Christi Cathedral is today and the new Coast Guard cutter Saranac arrived early for an emergency appendix operation for a seaman at Fred Roberts Hospital. WWI was called the great war  and was the war to end all wars. This is the only one of its kind in Texas.
