COMMEMORATION: Soldiers of the 24th Infantry Hung After Houston Riots Courts Martial

December 11 marks the 100 year of remembrance of members of the 24th Infantry Regiment Buffalo Soliders hung at Camp Travis at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio on December 11, 1917 after rioting outside of Camp Logan in Houston on August 23, 1917 (https://tshaonline.org/handbook/online/articles/jch04).

Students from the mentoring group the Bowtie Boys of North Texas and civil rights leaders with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) have planned a trip to San Antonio, Texas the weekend of December 9, 2017.

Approved students, parents, historians, military personnel and educators will receive a 10AM private tour of the historic Museum Gift Chapel, the location of the largest court-martial in US military history; the Salado Creek, the general site where the hangings took place.

The public Centennial Ceremony will take place at NOON the San Houston National Cemetery (Sec PA-B Headstones 20-36) where the Buffalo Soliders are buried.

The Bowtie Boys will then get an unique opportunity to hear from leaders of the Bexar County Buffalo Soldiers Association (BCBSA) at their beautiful park. The modern day soldiers will.provide a history briefing with an artifacts display about the life and legacy of the Buffalo Soliders.

Many may not know, but there are over 250 Buffalo Soliders buried at the San Antonio National Cemetery ( 250 + buried Buffalo Soldiers & Tomb of Unknown) near San Pedro Springs Park, the site to the 9th Cavalry initial training camp.
